“All people are born free”: Kirov joined the international UN action “Stand up for Human Rights!”

On December 9, Kirov universities, as well as representatives of public organizations and RAMP discussed the importance of the Declaration on Human Rights with Madame Mamad, Legal Adviser to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mozambique

International Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10 - on this day in 1948, the participating countries of the UN General Assembly voted for the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 2022, International Human Rights Day is dedicated to the theme "Dignity, freedom and justice for all".

In honor of this date, the Russian Association of International Law, the Volga-Vyatka Institute (branch) of the O. E. Kutafin University (MSAL) and Vyatka State University joined the UN action “Stand up for Human Rights!” and held a teleconference with the Republic of Mozambique. The Kirov branch of the "Union of Women of Russia" also joined the action.

President of the Russian Association of International Law (RAMP), Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation Anatoly Yakovlevich Kapustin began the online meeting with a reminder of the importance of this day:

     "First of all, I would like to express my conviction that, despite the difficult geopolitical situation in the world, mankind will find the strength to remain faithful to the ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which will turn 75 next year. The time that has passed since the adoption of the Declaration has confirmed the enduring value of the rights enshrined in it. And today the words of her first article that "all people are born free and equal in dignity and rights" have not lost their relevance.""

The Russian Association of International Law, which turned 65 this year, regularly pays attention to the topics of international law in the field of human rights. At her annual meeting in November 2022, she discussed the problems of protecting the rights of children and women, as well as improving international mechanisms for the protection of human rights. The topic of ensuring human rights remains relevant, so it is important that students and young people absorb knowledge and become familiar with the science of international law to solve these problems.

The meeting was attended by future lawyers and diplomats studying in the direction of "International Relations", as well as foreign students from universities in the city of Kirov. The speaker and moderator of the event from Vyatka State University was Elena Mikhailovna Gordeeva, Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law of the Law Institute.

The main guest of the event was Madame Farida Mamad, Legal Adviser to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mozambique. Despite the difficulties that African women face due to unfair discrimination, Madame Mamad was able to get a law degree, complete her doctoral studies at the Belgian Hasselt University, and then become the National Commissioner for Human Rights. Mamad also taught at the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.

Madame Mamad spoke about the problems with respect for human rights that exist on the African continent and in the world. In her speech, she stressed the importance of observing social and economic human rights, drawing on the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need for equal access to the protection of their fundamental rights guaranteed by the Declaration. Ensuring protection can help in solving many social problems associated with socio-economic risks: by defending their rights, a person gets opportunities.

At the end of the teleconference, Elena Gordeeva invited all interested students to use the acquired knowledge and conduct classes on human rights for the Kirov schoolchildren.

     "Today the world is facing new challenges: a pandemic, regional and local conflicts, climate change. But the values and rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights serve as guidelines for our collective action in response to modern challenges" - noted Elena Mikhailovna Gordeeva.
