Any work placement is a valuable experience for students in comprehending their future profession.
Ecologists of Vyatka State University finalize the results of the last year, which has become especially significant for them (announced the Year of Ecology in Russia and the region). In November-December 2017 VyatSU future ecologists had their on-the-job training, within which they had a possibility to reinforce theoretical knowledge by real professional activity, in specialized divisions of industrial enterprises and environmental organizations.

The Department of Ecology and Nature Management notes that the location for student field trip has significantly expanded since resent years: several students have gone outside Kirov region.

For example, Maria Gerasimova gained some work experience in the largest oil and gas company "Lukoil-Western Siberia". She was characterized by the company management as an active trainee with good knowledge, thus confirming the high level of preparation at VyatSU Institute of Chemistry and Ecology.

Ivan Yenov’s on-the-job training happened to become rich in impressions and experience; he’s got his work placement in Nizhneeobsk Territorial Department of the Federal Agency for Fisheries in Salekhard. During the on-the-job training course Ivan repeatedly took part in raids against illegal extraction of wildlife and aquatic biological resources. He explained that the number of valuable game fish on Yamal water territory has a tendency to decline in recent years. As a result traditional forms of fishing are threatened. Reduction of aquatic biological resources is explained by not only water pollution by hydrocarbon raw materials, but also by the illegal catch of fish, especially the whitefish. Therefore, at present, the fight against poachers is significantly being strengthened in Yamal, and modern technologies and techniques for observing violators are successfully used for this.

According to Ivan Yenov this brings real benefits: the number of registered violations related to illegal fish production has increased dramatically over the last two years. That means that the effectiveness of the fight against this environmental crime has also increased due to the timely identification and necessary measures adoption.

Traditionally rich experience in the field of environmental management and nature protection of the region was provided to VyatSU students during their on-the-job training in the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Kirov region. There future ecologists have mastered methods for calculating waste generation norms and limits for their placement, the procedure for preparing and drafting permits for the release of pollutants into the atmosphere, and methods and techniques for creating and maintaining a cadastre of specially protected natural areas. For many years Komi Institute of Biology of Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and its division - biomonitoring laboratory has been a reliable partner of VyatSU ecologists for providing them on-job-training. There students solved the problems of local monitoring of the ecological condition of districts in Kirov and Kirov region using modern software and GIS technologies.

In recent years the ecological well-being of Russians is associated also with the need to improve public and private relations in the sphere of waste management. A significant amount of settlement work, as well as documentation and statistical state environmental reporting in this area was carried out by students who chose a private environmental company for the field training. Their work has become an interesting and rewarding experience.

It is important to note that only positive feedback has been received from all the places where students passed their on-the-job-training. The students of Vyatka State University showed a high level of theoretical knowledge as well as brilliant ability to implement it in practice of environmental protection.
