The first in the history of our region Forest Forum took place at Vyatka State University

The main objective of the event is continuing the effective work on sustainable development of the timber industry of Kirov region by consolidating efforts of executive authorities, business and science. After all, it has traditionally been one of leading Russian regions in wood production and processing.

The government of the region has chosen a course to create an effective and transparent mechanism for monitoring the turnover of forest resources. Our main goals are increasing investment attractiveness of our region, increasing revenues to the local budget from forest using, and formation of civil responsibility in the sphere of forest relations, Maxim Kochetkov said.

He also pointed out that the development of the industry should be considered as a combination of factors: it is elaborated legislative policy, long-term projects development, construction of roads, training of personnel, and development of forest machinery. So, the Chief Designers Counsel of Kirov region and the Engineering Center have got set tasks to increase competitiveness and quality of products in order to interest timber processing companies in domestic forestry equipment.

Vyatka State University rector Valentin Pugach spoke about forestry sector support, focusing on personnel training and conducting relevant research on the basis of a higher educational institution.

Valentin Pugach said: “Vyatka State University will start implementing bachelor and master's programs in the field of Forestry in 2018”.

"Forestry" is a synthesis of engineering, science and economics and management education. Graduates of this direction will be able to work in forestry, logging, wood processing, construction companies, in parks and botanical gardens, in landscape design companies, as well as in forestry and environmental protection institutions.

Moreover, the research carried out by the University in the interests of a forestry sector is a wide range of works covering issues of competent use of forests, their restoration, risk assessment for shortage of products as a result of diseases and pests, as well as various legal issues of environmental protection, etc.

Almost all research is conducted with the involvement of industrial partners’ resources. Here we can see examples of an extremely competent, scientifically sound, and masterful approach to the use of forests in Kirov region. Especially it is necessary to note the long-term cooperation between Vyatka State University and Nolinsk Timber Industry Company: this is a unique example of interaction, thanks to which the University actually has forests showing examples of rational use of wood resources, and it is replicable throughout the region.

The University has fixed the direction of using forest resources as one of the priority in its strategic development.

Within the framework of the strategic development program, the Competence Center "Use of biological resources" has been created to solve the problems of scientific conditions for obtaining high-quality wood in shorter terms (reducing the time in 2-4 times) in a larger volume from a single area unit while preserving the local biodiversity.

It will ensure the preservation of the unique genetic potential of local regional forests, preservation and improvement of forest communities with natural regeneration of the forest-forming species, maximum reduction of biomass losses during processing of felling residues, restoration of rare and protected plants population.

In the framework of the forum there were organized round tables devoted to narrower topics. All interested could visit separate sites where experts told about new technologies of house-building, creation of woodworking production and development of glued wooden structures in Russia.

Participants of the Forum noted that today there was a great opportunity to share accumulated experience and knowledge, exchange opinions, express wishes and proposals to bring the timber industry complex to a new developed level.
