Can a machine do a better job of making building parts than humans?

Russian engineers have created a machine that can automatically cut out all the elements necessary for building a house in a week, according to the customer's project. A model of a building up to five stories high (for example, a residential building, school, kindergarten or medical facility) is loaded into the machine's computer, after which the machine itself calculates the number of necessary elements and begins to cut them out. According to the authors of the invention, the workers will only have to assemble the parts in the right order. The new machine can be almost three times cheaper than its counterpart from Germany, experts noted.

'Cutting the budget'

In the engineering center of the Kirov region (created on the basis of the Vyatka State University), a fully automatic woodworking machine was developed. With the help of such equipment, it is possible to construct a building with a height of up to five stories, taking into account all the customer's requirements for functionality and design. It can be an apartment building, school, kindergarten, medical institution.

    - The complete project of the house, made in any program intended for this, is loaded into the machine. The system calculates the amount of timber required to complete the work. The main idea was the maximum simplicity of the equipment: so that at the input it was possible to have raw materials (for example, a log), and get a set of the necessary parts on the output. Such a machine can be used without high qualifications and training,

- Ilya Lyangasov, Director of the Kirov Region Engineering Center, told Izvestia.

According to him, the workers will only have to transport the part to the desired place and assemble them - for this they will not need to use additional tools such as an ax or a saw.

According to the developers, it will be possible to assemble a new building in a month and a half, the exact time depends on the qualifications of the workers and the specifics of the project. A small private home can be made and assembled in a couple of weeks. It will take seven days to make parts for a three- or five-storey building.

- Externally, the machine resembles a large letter P (П). Inside it hangs a large assembly with a set of tools, - explained Ilya Lyangasov. - Between the “legs” of the letter, a 12 m long timber is fixed, which moves forward, going through processing. The machine also adjusts the order of work itself to maximize the use of raw materials and reduce waste.

The quality of the wood does not matter for the machine itself, but, of course, the comfort of the building users will depend on it.

'To the machine'

Machines of this kind are manufactured in Germany, they are called machining centers, Sergei Karataev, chief specialist in wooden housing construction at "Faeton" LLC, told "Izvestia".

They have magazines or units with installed tools - cutters, drills. They operate on a program of machine files created when designing a home. Depending on the options installed in the machine, they cut, for example, timber, often glued profiles, along the length at different angles, drill holes, cut out grooves, form joints, cut cups for corner joints. Marking options are also available in the machine itself, which allows the production of a complete set of parts for assembly at home,

- said the expert. According to him, there are no such machines in Russia yet.

The developers presented the machine of the company Holz House, which is engaged in the production of houses from laminated veneer lumber. They said they plan to put it into practice after the completion of the project.

- The machine will allow you to cut elements many times faster than with manual production, with your own machine, - said the representative of the company Sergey Krupin. - For example, it will make parts for a two-storey house, which is most often ordered by private clients, in 3-5 days, depending on the area of the building. The machine is fully automatic. There are only two manual actions - to put a log in it and assemble the elements into the house. Compared to foreign similar equipment, the Russian machine is almost three times cheaper - it costs about 15 million rubles instead of 40 millions. Plus, it can perform even more functions due to its design features.
The machine will be fully ready by the end of 2021, it is now undergoing final tests, the developers said.

As Izvestia wrote, earlier in Russia the demand for the construction of wooden houses increased. The number of applications for the construction of such buildings last year increased by 30%. In the conditions of self-isolation, many Russians realized that they would like to have suburban housing. In addition, there are special bank loans for the purchase of wooden houses. This also contributes to an increase in the availability and sales of such housing, experts say.
