Department of inorganic and physical chemistry is one of the oldest department of Chemical faculty of Vyatka state University. It was originated as a Department of General Chemistry in 1965.
Since 1967, the Department has been graduating and trained engineers in the specialty "Technology of inorganic substances". The head of the Department was associate Professor Marina V. Simonova. She has worked in this position until 1972. Under her leadership, were developed: the main theoretical courses (General and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry), engineering disciplines (General chemical technology), special courses in disciplines of technology of inorganic substances. Laboratories were equipped. The research laboratory of chemistry and physics of semiconductors was created. The scientific direction, created by M. V. Simonova, remains at the Department until now and is further developed in the works of her students.
In 1967, the research laboratory "Semiconductors and solid electrolytes" was established.
The objects of research of the Department at present are sulfide-conducting solid electrolytes based on thiolantanates of alkaline earth metals. The possibility of creating composite solid electrolytes with conductivity for sulfur ions is considered. Along with the study of properties, the possible areas of practical application of the obtained results as elements of various technological devices are considered: sensors, fuel cells, electrolyzes and others.
Since 2010, Candidate of chemical Sciences, associate Professor Yu. N. Ushakov, heads the Department. During this time, the instrument base of the existing laboratories was strengthened and now the Department is equipped with modern equipment.
The Department continues the tradition of active involvement of students in research work.

The Department continues the tradition of active involvement of students in research work.Despite the fact that the Department is not a graduate, every year the Department is managed the scientific works of students, including 3 - 5 graduation works.
During the existence of the Department of Inorganic and physical chemistry, its employees defended 23 Candidate's dissertations. Teachers, staff and graduate students of the Department annually participate in scientific and methodological conferences at various levels. The results of scientific research are published in Russian and foreign journals.
The Department actively cooperates with leading scientific institutes and universities of Russia and CIS.
Currently, the Department of Inorganic and physical chemistry is one of the leading Department of the Chemical Faculty of the Vyatka state University.
