The Faculty Mission

- At the State level:

To preserve and develop the Russian language as one of the state-forming factors

 - At the Regional level:

To provide the development and existence of the Russian literary language and Russian literature in Kirov and Kirov region as one of basic means of the Russian nation union

 - At the International level:

To fulfill the primary Government task "... to make the Russian literature, the Russian language a powerful factor of the ideological influence of Russia in the world" (Vladimir Putin)

 

The Faculty of Philology: General Information

The Faculty of Philology is one of the first ones that have launched in Vyatka. Its history started from the Teachers' Institute foundation in 1914. The first teachers of the Russian language and literature were trained at literary and art cycles (1918), then at literature theory cycles (1921), and then in the Linguistic Department (1924) and the Department of the Russian Language and Literature (1927). In 1934-1935 the Faculty of the Russian language and literature was founded and was renamed into the Faculty of Philology later on in 2000. Since 2016 it has been known as the Faculty of Philology and Media Communications.

 

The Faculty Today

Now the Faculty deservedly considered being one of the most prestigious classical faculties in Kirov. Despite the fact that it is one of the oldest, it is not old-fashioned at all. Professional lecturers of the Faculty combine the fundamental academic preparation and the most advanced educational technologies. Along with the classical disciplines (History of Russian Literary Language, the Modern Russian language), students study there the basics of advertising, PR, journalism, TV speech. So a student now is not a "bookworm", but a mobile professional able to realize his potential in any field where the Word is dominated.

 

Structure of the Faculty

 

Currently the structure of the Faculty consists of three Departments: the Department of Russian language, speech culture and teaching methods (the Head of the Department is the Candidate of Philological Sciences Associate Professor N.G.Naumov), the Department of Russian and foreign literature and teaching methods (the Head of the Department is the Doctor of Pedagogic Sciences Professor E.O. Galitskikh), the Department of journalism and integrated communications (the Head of the Department is the Candidate if Philosophic Sciences Associate Professor V.A.Timshin).

A Laboratory for Extra-Linguistic Studies headed by the Candidate of Philological Sciences Associate Professor Z.V. Smetanina also works at the Faculty. The laboratory is engaged in linguistic and sociolinguistic research of Vyatka regional speech, conservation and replenishment of Vyatka phonetic speech fund, preparation and publication of "Vyatka Regional Dictionary".

 

Scientific Achievements

The Philological Faculty performs scientific research by organizing and carrying out international and regional conferences, Green-Likhanov’s and St. Trifon’s Readings, publishing monographs and collections of scientific papers, textbooks, test books and study programs developed for the language and literature teachers and students.

The Faculty lecturers participate in scientific conferences of various levels (both Russian and foreign), publish articles in leading scientific journals, and successfully work with various grant projects.

The main research areas of the Faculty are study of genre and artistic creativity of Russian and foreign writers and poets of the XVIII-XX centuries; the study of literature and folklore of Vyatka region, as well as the development of modern humanitarian technologies for philological subjects teaching; systemic-functional and interpretative analysis of language units; Russian regional speech of Vyatka: linguistic and sociolinguistic aspects.

Every year the Faculty is in charge for the celebration of the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture. It is a tradition for the Faculty to participate in "Vyatka’s Cicero" literary (speaker’s) event and the "total dictation" carrying out and its verification, besides the Faculty teachers deliver public open lectures available for locals of Kirov and Kirov region, and much more.

 

International activity

The Faculty has been working closely with Heihe University of China since 2006. Currently it runs a study program for bachelors in Philology ("1 + 3").

Since 2014 an active cooperation has been developing with the University of West Bohemia (Plzen, Czech Republic). Students’ mobility exchange is available for 3 months and traineeship for 1 month.

 

Academic Perspectives

After getting the Master's degree the graduates can continue their scientific work choosing some postgraduate programs on Russian and foreign literature, the Russian language, folklore, publishing business and library science.
