Training of energy specialists in Kirov began in 1955, there was only 4 specialty: electrical machines, power supply, electrical systems, industrial engineering.

The Department of electrical machines and apparatus was founded in 1963.

In 1967 the Department has started the admission of students on specialty "Electrical machines and apparatus". Since that time, more than 1600 engineers-electricians were trained.

In 2007, the Department was named after Alexander Savvich Bolshev, the General Director of the Kirov Electro machine-building Production Association named after Lepse. More than 30 years Bolshev was the head of State Attestation Commission on a specialty "Electrician".
